British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
