Our Leading Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Position.

At first glance, this album might appear closer to a difficult university quiz than a new popular music record from an artist who just had a last hit featured an international pop star. Split into four separate sections and voiced in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often by way of the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition alone renders the work of other artists look quite modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to escape overly intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, and full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to alchemize the past and modern styles, its scale are far greater here, and the balancing act far more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly on the stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you never quite know—nor wish to predict—where it will go to next."

Almost every song finishes at a completely different point than where it started. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album is navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is no coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. That trick gets repeated on a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of hidden gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
